Lynyrd Skynyrd is having a rough couple months as they tried to get back to a new normal. First, Gary Rossington had to have emergency surgery to have stent work done. He is currently home recuperating.  He gave his blessing for the band to continue on and go play their shows.  Johnny reported to the audience attending that first show what happened to Gary and Gary’s wishes for the show to go on. Last Two Original Members

Original members Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke are now both out at the same time, Rossington for surgery recuperation and Medlocke for Covid-19. These fantastic artists played on the first album at the famous Muscles Shoals Sessions.  Rickey wrote or co-wrote several songs on that first album and sang lead on a few. He is pictured on that very first much beloved album. Rickey is also one of the Co-founders of the band BLACKFOOT which enjoyed Southern Rock fame with Train, Train and Highway Song.

The Show Must Go On

The band played a few shows without Gary.  At the end of this week, Rickey Medlocke tested positive for Covid-19. With Rickey’s positive test results, it was determined that the band should reschedule, postpone and or cancel some upcoming shows and events. It is well known that Rickey suffers from a lifelong lung issue which makes his Covid-19 infection very worrisome. This news was broken via the bands Facebook page. See below.

During the Covid hiatus

While the band was on hiatus because of the pandemic lead singer Johnny Van Zant had Covid-19. He documented his journey by video updates.  Van Zant voiced that he had been vaccinated and he was happy he was because he thought things could have been much worse if he hadn’t. He also noted that his other family members had also tested positive for Covid but all were vaccinated and expected to be just fine.
