Today the Music Died

Today the music died is actually a play on words for the day the music died.  It’s hard to believe that it was 57 years ago on February 3, 1959 when a fateful plane crash ended the life of Charles Hardin Holly better know by his stage name, Buddy Holly and JP Richardson who went the name “the Big Bopper,” and Richie Valens.

Future country star Waylon Jennings was slated to be on that plane as well but opted to give his seat to the Big Bopper who was feeling particularly ill. Jennings said that the event haunted him for the rest of his life.

Holly and the rest were a part of a winter traveling concert series that was traveling mostly by bus to take their rock and roll to the masses across the Midwestern US.

The plane crash happened after a show in Clear Lake Iowa and there is a sign post near the crash site which is nothing more than a large pair of thick dark rimmed glasses. These glasses were a trademark of Holly and it is a plain and to the point way to mark the place where he and the others lost their life that early morning.

It should be noted that the pilot was not certified to be flying with only instruments and that is cited as a major reason for the crash that killed the legends and snuffed out the lights of these early rock and roll pioneers.

That date coined the phrase, “The Day the Music Died” and many of our readers may not even be old enough to recall this as happening so it bears a break to remember the young lives ended much too soon. The incident is partially put to lyrics in the Don McLean song “American Pie” which starts by covering the crash as “The Day the Music Died.”
