Most people know that Paul Kantner from the legendary Jefferson Airplane passed away on January 28 of this year. Most people have not paid attention to the fact that the original female lead singer of the band, Signe Toly Anderson also passed away. This was confirmed by the magazine Rolling Stone.

Strangely her death was on the exact same day as Kantners’ so it didn’t get much media attention.

True fans of the Jefferson Airplane will recall that Anderson was the female vocalist on the bands first LP, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off and stayed with the band more than a year.

Anderson became pregnant and opted to stay off the road to properly raise her child and so she was replaced on female lead vocals by Grace Slick the then lead singer of the group the Great Society.

Anderson was originally a folk singer from Portland, Oregon who migrated to California for the folk rock music scene. She was offered the position of lead vocalist after band leader Marty Balin saw her perform in San Francisco and knew she was the right voice for the group.

Ever the true trooper Anderson stayed with the band as they looked for and auditioned various replacements. Once they had settled on Slick to fill the position Anderson stepped down from the limelight and the Airplane took off for the skies full of hits.

    1. WOW!!!!!
I HAD NO IDEA. HOW SAD!! I SO remember her beautiful voice.
She did the right thing and I’m sure that child is so, eternally grateful for her.
My most sincere condolences to her loving family and leaves behind.

    2. In all sincerity, I liked her better than Slick. It is so sad that we have come to a time in this world where so many of our greats are leaving us. God, would you please put a moratorium on all this.
